Where It's Placed (놓여 있어요)

a

놓다 (to place) and 걸다 (to hang) are active verbs, things you do to an object. Add 여/려 있다 and they describe the resulting state instead: 놓여 있다, “is placed,” 걸려 있다, “is hanging.”

kkotbyeongeul teibeul wie noayo.
I place the vase on the table.
kkotbyeongi teibeul wie noyeo isseoyo.
The vase is placed on the table.
In Real Life
놓여 있다 and 걸려 있다 are more specific versions of 있어요. 꽃병이 테이블 위에 있어요 is also technically true, but naming how something sits there, laid flat versus hanging, sounds more natural and detailed, the kind of thing a native speaker adds without even thinking about it.
osi otgeorie geollyeo isseoyo.
Clothes are hanging on a hanger.
deungi cheonjange geollyeo isseoyo.
The light is hanging on the ceiling.
menyuga byeoge geollyeo isseoyo.
The menu is hanging on the wall.
kusyeoni sopa wie noyeo isseoyo.
The cushion is placed on the sofa.
In Real Life
The split isn’t about size or weight, it’s about orientation. Anything resting flat on a surface is 놓여 있다; anything suspended from something is 걸려 있다. A clock lying on a table is 놓여 있어요; the same clock mounted on the wall is 걸려 있어요.
byeoge sigyehago geurimi geollyeo isseoyo.
A clock and a picture are hanging on the wall.
