Going To (-ㄹ 거예요)

-(으)ㄹ 거예요 states future intention: vowel-ending stems take -ㄹ 거예요, consonant-ending stems take -을 거예요. It’s the concrete version of “will” or “going to,” a decided plan rather than a hope.

이번 주말에 뭐 할 거예요?

ibeon jumare mwo hal geoyeyo?

What are you going to do this weekend?

백화점에서 쇼핑할 거예요.

baekhwajeomeseo syopinghal geoyeyo.

I'm going to shop at the department store.

저녁에 책을 읽을 거예요.

jeonyeoge chaegeul ilgeul geoyeyo.

I will read a book in the evening.

In Real Life

고 싶어요 states a wish, no commitment attached. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 states a plan. 여행을 가고 싶어요 is “I want to travel,” someday, maybe. 여행을 갈 거예요 is “I’m going to travel,” it’s decided.

공원에서 자전거를 탈 거예요.

In Real Life

The same ending covers predictions too, not just personal plans. 내일 비가 올 거예요, “it will probably rain tomorrow,” uses the identical grammar even though weather doesn’t have intentions. Anything you’re stating with confidence about the future, plan or forecast, reaches for -(으)ㄹ 거예요.
